I don’t care if it was a friendly fixture or that the opposition was Exeter City; a much-respected Arsenal captain scoring a hat-trick is surely something to celebrate.

One thing that struck me was that Ure was coming back from a cartilage operation. When was the last time you heard of a footballer having a cartilage operation? It seemed almost mandatory for players up to the mid 1980s to eventually have their cartilages removed.
Nowadays it’s all metatarsals and mysterious muscle strains.
I remember hurting my knee in a muckabout kids game when I was about 6 or 7 and being quite disappointed that I wasn’t having a cartilage operation as a result.
The foot injuries are the fault of the boots; blades and thin leather uppers are a lethal combination.
