  1. If I remember this story correctly his son had scored some goals in a match in the morning and given Alex some stick about his lack of goals – Alex replied he’d score a hat-trick for the boy that afternoon. History or legend I don’t know but it does make a great story.

  2. He was known to be a character, Jag, so it may well be true.

    Alex James was more of goalscorer at Preston with Herbert Chapman turning him into more of an inside forward schemer.
    No I did not see this game but love it it anyone knows of any links to decent footage from this time. All you seem to get is a couple of seconds of indiscernible football action followed by 10 of delirious crowd scenes.
