Arsenal On This Day, 9th February 1905

Instead of their usual journey north for an away match, Arsenal headed to the west. Bristol City had been the most southerly of all Football League teams for four seasons from 1901-02 until 1905-06 season when Chelsea and Clapton Orient were admitted to an expanded Division Two.

Arguably this FA Cup tie was the nearest thing to a professional derby match for Arsenal at the time.

  1. Unusual summary of the first forty-five minutes: “At half time neither side had scored.” I wonder if the reporter arrived late!

  2. Tell me about it. Reading these old reports makes you realise how many wonderful words the English language has lost. “Moiety” is my favourite.
