Arsenal On This Day, 9th March 1971

European adventures today with 1FC Koln beaten in the first leg of the Fairs Cup Quarter-Final. Having been originally denied the opportunity to defend the trophy, Arsenal set about making a decent fist of it. A fortnight later in Germany though and the squad were left with the League and FA Cup to occupy their minds as they succumbed to a single goal defeat.

  1. That was just about my favourite Arsenal 11 of the period. It was always difficult to accommodate Charlie, Graham and Sammels in the same 11.

One of my abiding memories of the ‘Double’ season was Sammels and Graham playing one twos around the box for Graham to hammer home, yet I suspect this only happenned a couple of times.

  2. This was a dire game & we went out, I think on away goals, by dent, by all English accounts, of a dreadful refereeing performance. Some things don`t change then.
Cbob, do you remember the 5-0 at Palace & the Liverpool game, just after, when the pair combined for some goals of the season stuff? Sammy had a hell of a shot & Stroller specialised in the sublime volley.
