Arsenal On This Day, 11th March 1970

En route to winning the Inter City Fairs Cup in 1970, Arsenal only won one of their away legs. That arose on this day in Romania, Dinamo Bacau were the hosts. Of the other ties, there were goalless draws in Rouen and Lisbon whilst the matches in Brussels and Amsterdam ended in defeat.

Do we gloss over the defeat in Belfast at the hands of Glentoran? Perhaps not for the Irish team had in 1967-68 come close to ended Benfica’s run to Wembley in the European Champions Cup. They held the Portuguese giants to a 1-1 draw at home before becoming the first team to stop their hosts scoring in the Estadio da Luz during a European tie. The goalless draw meant that Benfica progressed on the away goals rule, the first time it was used.
