Arsenal Get Refereeing Break To Beat Chelsea On This Day, 20th March 1973

The 1972-73 season was a watershed moment; the last time that Arsenal worried the top four of Division One for some time and the last good cup run for five years. It ended in what was a shock semi-final defeat at Hillsborough to the eventual winners, Sunderland then of Division Two. Their heroics in the final in beating Leeds United means that is often (thankfully) overlooked.

It was a controversial night – hence the second piece below – with Norman Burtenshaw, one of the country’s top referees at the time, in the eye of a storm.
