A routine 2 – 0 win over Tottenham took on more significance following the untimely death of David Rocastle. More than the stereotypical defender or luggard midfielder of the end of the era, Rocastle was a typical Graham player certainly of the first six years of his reign. Hard-working, well aware of the team ethic but technically capable. Had this young man been around as a player at the turn of this century, Freddie Ljungberg probably would never have made the Arsenal first team.
Talk often focusses on May 26th 1989 but for me his ultimate Anfield performance came in October 1988. He ran rings around the Liverpool midfield and capped it off with a marvellous strike. It can be found at 4’10 on this video.
It is a pleasure to watch any young player come through the ranks at Arsenal and make the grade. When they have as much talent as David Rocastle possessed, it is like all of your Christmases have come at once.
