Nelson’s Column On Display At Arsenal On This Day, 4th April 1979

As iconic an image of Arsenal in the 1970s as you will find, this match against Coventry City would probably be lost in the midst of forgettable draws were it not for Sammy Nelson’s intervention.

The Northern Irish full back had given the visitors the lead with an own goal, levelling the scores late in the game. Offering his opinion on the barracking received for his earlier effort, Nelson almost paid a heavy price for his moon.

Charged with bringing the game into disrepute by the Football Association, he requested a personal hearing only for that letter to be caught in a postal dispute. The delay threatened his appearance at Wembley in the FA Cup Final against Manchester United, a situation only resolved in Sammy’s favour in the week before that match.
