Mr Elcoat Takes Charge Of Arsenal On This Day, 11th April 1898

William Elcoat was the second permanent manager of Arsenal, his first match in charge appears to be this victory over Burton Swifts. An excellent history of Elcoat and his tenure can be found on Andy Kelly‘s superb site. The club still erroneously lists his younger brother George as Arsenal manager.

  1. Thanks for the comment about my website! I’m working on a book on Woolwich Arsenal with two other like-minded fans (we’re about 75% complete) which should be out in June. We’ve gone one step further with regard William Elcoat and will be including a club letterhead that leaves no doubt that it was William, and not George, that was the club’s manager.
