Arsenal At The Double On This Day, 8th May 1971

Five days after the climatic end to the League season, Arsenal clinched the double at Wembley with an iconic goal celebration from a ‘knackered’ Charlie George. That it was live on television helped cement this moment in the minds more readily than the grainy black and white footage of Ray Kennedy’s header at White Hart Lane the previous Monday.

Having dented Liverpool’s trophy-winning aspirations on this May afternoon, a year to the day later Arsenal would hold them to a goalless draw at Highbury in a league encounter. Had Liverpool won that night, they would have been Champions. A little bit of history repeating itself.
