Swedes Mashed By Arsenal On This Day, 18th May 1961

Back in the day end of season tours were as prevalent as those that signalled the incremental increases in training before the start of each campaign. Like many English teams, Arsenal spent many a week out of season in Scandanavia although curiously enough I cannot find any record of any encounters with Finnish teams. Perhaps someone has more information on that.

This was the fifth (and so far last) encounter with a Swedish international representative side, a series of matches which began thirty-eight years (almost to the day) previously in 1923 with a 3 – 2 victory. Arsenal won all of these matches, scoring 20 goals and conceding 7.
