‘End of an era’ is a widely and overused cliché when it comes to football. But twenty years ago really was a fundamental shift in football. In order to comply with The Taylor Report, terracing had to go and the North Bank ceased to be after an emotional farewell.
The stand erected in its place was fine enough but hindsight suggests a missed design opportunity. With Arsenal staying at the ground for over a decade, the Clock End also needed a revamp with its tower block designed boxes. If Prince Charles though the extension of the National Gallery to be a “monstrous carbuncle”, it would be interesting to hear him describe the Clock at Highbury.
As it was, the politicians of the day kept true to form. This is the day that they destroyed our history.
