Pre-Season Training But Howe For Arsenal? On This Day, 5th July 1971

The departure of Don Howe to West Bromwich Albion in the close season of 1971 was disappointing. With hindsight, it is easy to suppose that Don regrets the decision but I doubt that to be the case; he would probably have more regrets if he had not taken the Albion job. But more on that in a few days time.

As it was pre-season training had to resume, the plans for the defence of the double worked upon and players to returned to their expected levels of fitness.

  1. You only have to read the autobiographies of the players that played under Mee and Howe to realise how influential Howe was.

  2. I’ve got the Bernard Joy book, and also the Jon Sammels book as it happens. Bought ’em yonks back when I was Little Al, Banbury, England. They’re in a loft in England with a collection of progs, handbooks, books and annuals. I’m missing my footie collectionsas much as family and friends (ssshhhhh….)
