The Formation Of Woolwich Arsenal Football and Athletic Company, On This Day, 25th July 1910

The history of Arsenal Football Club shows that the self-sustaining model has not always been successful for the club. There were several years of financial problems which led to Sir Henry Norris’ involvement and the transformation began with the formation of a new Woolwich Arsenal Football and Athletic Comany as reported below.

The story is covered in more depth in the soon to be published bookWoolwich Arsenal F.C.: 1893-1915 The Club That Changed Football by Tony Attwood, Andy Kelly and Mark Andrews, which can be purchased here.

I am indebted to Andy Kelly for providing the scan of the Kentish Independent article at the bottom of the page, which is a simply fascinating read. Modern football politics has nothing on this!

  1. A million trillion thanks for the link to our book – Woolwich Arsenal the club that changed football. It is now published. It has taken a couple of years to do from the moment of the first thoughts about it, and I would like to pay tribute to Mark Andrews and Andy Kelly. In fact looking at the book today, on the day after publication, I start to wonder why my name is on the book at all – they did the work.

But the key thing is that this is the big re-write of Arsenal’s early league history – and I would like to think this is the book that will stay for years to come. The research into the book was so exhaustive that I can’t believe anyone can really take it to bits and publish anything different.

So today, I’m happy. Not just because the book is out, but because of your kind mentioning of it.
