Magnificent Seven For Arsenal On This Day, 4th September 1979

Nine months on from his maiden Arsenal hat-trick, Alan Sunderland repeated the feat in this demolition of Leeds United in a League Cup Second Round tie. This was the second leg, the two teams had drawn 1 – 1 at Elland Road the previous Wednesday.

The Yorkshire club were a shadow of the Revie era. Five seasons on from defeat in Paris at the hands of Bayern Munich in the Champions Cup final, Leeds were slipping into mid-table before dropping out of the First Division at the end of 1981-82.

For Arsenal, it was the beginning of a superb cup season, in total they would play 27 matches in knockout tournaments, 18 domestically and 9 in Europe. Of that 18, seven were replays including the infamous three against Liverpool in the FA Cup semi-final. This League Cup run came to an end in the quarter-finals where once more Swindon Town triumphed.

  1. I used to live less than a mile away from the ground and, if the crowd was big enough, could hear the crowd roar when there was a goal. I remember that evening, wondering what the hell was going on.
