Arsenal Start Their Quest To Win The Fairs Cup On This Day, 9th September 1969

Glentoran would not have instilled fear in Arsenal hearts when the draw was made but a healthy respect would have been there had anyone referred to their recent European history. The previous seasons had seen the Northern Irish club lose narrowly to Rangers and Benfica, the latter on the away goals rule becoming the first team to do so following its introduction as the deciding factor in european club competitions.

As it was, this was a comfortable win for Arsenal in a campaign that end in glory in April 1970.

    • Andy,
Same name, but is this is the same player? I don’t think so.
Wikipedia makes no mention of our Arsenal man having played for Glentoran. Wiki says he played for Millwall, Cork and Derry after us.
      Arsenal.com – a waste of time.

I then keyed: “Billy McCullough Glentoran” into the Search Engine. Several sites write of a player of that name, playing for Glentoran: played 555 games. Nickame: Tank. But not one reference that he previously played for Arsenal. But the (poss) giveaway that he’s not our ex-Arsenal man… Glentoran career 1961-74.
He left Highbury in 1966. The dates don’t correspond.
