Arsenal Run Riot At Upton Park On This Day, 1st October 1988

My recollection of this match is considerably different to these reports below. I still remember it as the most complete away performance of the season and one watched from the home stand opposite the Chicken Run.

Arsenal were almost imperious this day, sitting back allowing West Ham to attack having established an early two-goal lead, a deficit that the hosts never looked like retrieving. The two late goals were almost identical in that spaces had opened up and Arsenal exploited them emphatically. This game for me, was where the title charge began. We’d been doing well before, inconsistently so. Now a ruthless streak emerged, a durability. George Graham at the time noted that this was the match where his squad served notice of their intentions.
