Ray Kennedy Grabs His Only Arsenal Hat-trick On This Day, 3rd October 1970

Ray Kennedy played over two hundred games for Arsenal was a prolific goalscorer. You might not believe that from his record of 71 goals but he scored in 61 games, rarely scoring more than once. Kennedy is 26th in the list of Arsenal’s leading goalscorers but moves ten places higher on a goals / game ratio, ahead of the likes of Radford, Bergkamp, Sunderland and Smith.

This was his only hat-trick for Arsenal in any competitive fixture and as far as I have been able to ascertain, any first team friendlies as well.

  1. I was at this game. In fact, I was at all the home games that season, including evening games. Quite remarkable considering I lived approx 72 miles from London. But I was a remarkable 16 year-old lad back then.

What is also remarkable is the ‘Teletubbies’ outfit worn by the boss, years before the Teletubbies actually arrived on the scene.
