David Jack Scores His First Goal For The Arsenal, On This Day, 10th November 1928

The signing of David Jack is Arsenal folklore. About the only thing which can be said to be indisputable is the £10,890 fee (£3.45m in 2012) that almost doubled the world record at that time.

Jack had made his debut in late October against Newcastle United – what quirk of fate so often sets them as the opposition in notable games in Arsenal’s history – at St James Park but had to wait until this match, his second home appearance (fourth in total) before breaking his duck. He would score another 25 in all competitions in 1928/29, 25 in 31 League appearances alongside a solitary goal in the 2 – 0 FA Cup 4th Round win over Mansfield Town at Highbury.
