John Radford Hits Three For Arsenal On This Day, 2nd January 1965

For a young centre-forward, breaking your duck in the professional game is a crucial barrier to breakthrough. John Radford didn’t so much break it as take a sledgehammer to the wall and send it crashing to the ground. Having made his debut against West Ham United the previous November, Radford had played once since for the first XI in a competitive match without scoring.

This hat-trick although not Radford’s first for the club – he had grabbed three in a friendly against Kettering – meant that he became the youngest Arsenal player to grab a treble in a match. I am not sure but think that record still stands.
