Whatever transpired in the future, for more than a decade it is difficult for anyone to argue that David Dein was not the most influential football politico in the United Kingdom. He even spread his tentacles to the continent, engineering Arsenal into the G-14. It is equally right to say he was not universally popular with opposite numbers, fans and the media. He had struck a chord with David Lacey (after the programme scan below) on this day two decades ago, with an interview published in the programme for the Tottenham match three days earlier.
