CS Gas Thrown As Arsenal Progress In FA Cup On This Day, 10th January 1987

Reading 3 - 1p

A brace from Charlie Nicholas and a Martin Hayes penalty won through this tie. Arsenal were comfortable winners in difficult conditions.

Living in Guildford, it was a quick trip on the train to arrive early. Priorities were finding a spare ticket and bar in which to keep warm, successfully achieved. Media reports suggest CS gas was thrown at the local constabulary but it passed us by as we were comfortably ensconced with ale flowing freely. I have a vague recollection of the game aided by a video somewhere of the highlights which include one of the two occasions I have unwittingly appeared in the crowd scene, Anfield 1989 the other.
