Having scored six at White Hart Lane the previous match, Arsenal supporters turned out in force to see the League leaders taken on second placed Sunderland. 73,295 of them in fact, the record attendance at Highbury. As is usual in football, the match did not live up to the hype. At the final whistle, Arsenal still led the way on 43 points, Sunderland trailed by 2 points but were ahead of Manchester City on goal average.
