Arsenal Prepare For Winter On This Day, 1st June 1970

It was a feature of my youth that Arsenal home games were rarely called off. Conditions in North London had to be arctic for that to happen whilst a mild snowstorm was enough to force the closure of the rest of the league programme.

Undersoil heating had originally been installed at Highbury in 1964  but it was not the first English football ground to do so, Everton completing work six years previously at Goodison Park. The initial system was electrical but the replacement system using pipes and steam, lasted until the mid-80s when it was upgraded.
