Would football be able to attract such riches if the same stringent rules were in place over directors? I doubt it. So did Arsenal pave the way for the Premier League with this rebellion against Football Association rules? Not entirely but one of the planks for its formation was to make the rich richer so in that sense, David Dein and his allies built on a strand already put in place by the club half a decade before they planned their coup.
And Altrincham never made it to the Football League.
