Bernard Joy, An Arsenal Olympian On This Day, 1st August 1936

I say an Arsenal Olympian and whilst he was, his registration was still held by Corinthian Casuals despite the fact that he was on the books of Arsenal. Such was the very blurred dividing line between the professional and amateur games in that era.

The British team reached the Quarter-Finals in those games. Having defeated China 2 – 0 in the Round of 16, Britain succumbed to Poland by the odd goal in nine. Britain took the lead but by the 56th minute the Poles were 5 – 1 ahead. Cue the British comeback, Joy scoring in the 78th and 80th minutes to cut the deficit to a single goal.
