Arsenal Win Their First Away Match In The League On This Day, 30th December 1893

Woolwich Arsenal travelled to Manchester to face Ardwick for their seventh away match in their debut season in the Football League. Their previous six matches had yielded a solitary point gained at Northwich Victoria. A narrow defeat at Meadow Lane in their first away match was the best of the rest. The winner – and a place in Arsenal’s history – was scored by James Henderson, a prolific striker who scored 31 times in 47 appearances in his time at the club.

This match was the second in a run of six away games which would see them lose four and draw at Rotherham Town. They would win two more on their travels, Walsall Town Swifts and Middlesbrough Ironopolis proving generous hosts.
